More about music for your business
Business-use answer
Can a barbershop play Spotify or YouTube?
Use YouTube or Spotify as inspiration when briefing your vibe, not as the customer-facing music system. Spotify's terms describe access as personal and non-commercial, and YouTube's terms describe listening as personal and non-commercial while restricting public screening or music streaming. Sonosfera is built for eligible Sonosfera-catalogue playback in supported business spaces.

UK music licensing
How much does a UK music licence cost for a business?
In the UK, most businesses that play mainstream commercial music need TheMusicLicence from PPL PRS, which collects for two societies at once. A pub with an audible area of 400 m² or less playing through a radio pays £359.95 a year ex VAT — £204.19 to PPL plus £155.76 to PRS for Music. Through a streaming service or CD player the PRS row changes and the total is £515.78 ex VAT. Your own figure depends on sector, floor area and how music is used. You don't need a PPL PRS licence to play Sonosfera: our catalogue is fully rights-controlled and sits outside PPL and PRS repertoire, so you can play it in your venue freely. Every track you play through Sonosfera is included. Any other music — radio, streaming or live — needs its own licence.
Questions, answered.
Not for eligible Sonosfera catalogue playback at covered premises. Our catalogue is owned outright and isn't registered with PPL PRS, so TheMusicLicence isn't needed for Sonosfera playback. PPL, PRS, and TheMusicLicence may still be relevant if your venue also plays Spotify, radio, DJs, live music, uploaded files, or third-party playlists.
Playback pauses until you choose a plan; nothing is deleted. Your account, zones, business profile and music preferences are all kept, so if you upgrade later you pick up exactly where you left off. The trial takes no card, so you'll never be charged automatically.
Any time, in a couple of clicks: Settings → Billing → Cancel membership. You keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for — no calls, no forms. Paid-upfront multi-year plans run to the end of their agreed term; the pricing page sets out their terms.
On this page, Sonosfera means the Sonosfera business background music service at sonosfera.app: catalogue-scoped playback, country-aware pricing, player/display tools, and certificate-ready records for eligible Sonosfera tracks. It is not the unrelated Italian Sonosfera cultural or museum project.
Sonosfera gives you business-safe playlists built for flow, not random shuffle luck. It fits best when the background layer has a clear job: Confident, upbeat, conversation-aware music that gives the shop personality without taking over. Keep Sonosfera catalogue playback separate from radio, DJs, live music, uploads, and third-party playlists.
Yes. If music is playing in a customer-facing business, licensing matters. Sonosfera is built to remove that uncertainty.
Yes. The point is not bland music. The point is controlled, brand-safe music that still gives the shop its edge.
No. You don’t need a PPL PRS licence to play Sonosfera. Our catalogue is fully rights-controlled and sits outside PPL and PRS repertoire, so you can play it in your venue freely. Every track you play through Sonosfera is included. If you also play other sources — Spotify, radio, TV, DJs, live music or third-party playlists — those need their own licence. Rights documentation is available on request.

Because that still leaves you with a consumer product in a business setting. Sonosfera is positioned for commercial playback from the start, with catalogue ownership and proof aligned to that use case.
For music in the Sonosfera catalogue: no. With an active plan, your Sonosfera subscription is your licence for our music. Sonosfera music is owned by Sonosfera and is not registered with TheMusicLicence or PPL PRS or any other collecting society. Other music you play (radio, TV, Spotify, live music) still needs your TheMusicLicence or PPL PRS licence.
Yes. Sonosfera's catalogue is owned outright and isn't registered with any collecting society, so eligible playback of the Sonosfera catalogue is properly cleared for supported commercial settings, with certificate-ready records to prove it. It does not cover Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, radio, DJs, live music, uploads, or third-party playlists — those keep their own routes.
Sonosfera is a business music product with venue playlists, certificate-ready records for eligible accounts, and a catalogue-specific playback route. Personal streaming accounts are not the same as commercial venue playback rights. Local society fees can apply to mainstream music on top of a streaming subscription. Sonosfera's owned catalogue needs no separate society licence for eligible catalogue playback under an active plan.
Any internet-connected device works: computer, tablet, smart TV, or dedicated media player. Just connect to your existing sound system.
Absolutely. Business plans support multi-location management from a single dashboard, perfect for chains and franchises.
You won't find chart hits or specific artists. That's a licensing limitation, not a choice. But you can request the types of music, moods, and genres you want, and your input directly shapes what gets added. Sonosfera is for businesses who want curated catalogue playback that runs itself.
The track that's already playing keeps going from its buffer, and playback resumes automatically once your connection comes back. After a longer outage you may need to tap play once. Music isn't stored offline, so you'll need a working connection for continuous all-day playback.
Yes. Sign in to your Sonosfera account in any phone browser and the dashboard doubles as a remote: play or pause each zone, skip tracks, switch the vibe, and adjust the volume, all while the music keeps playing on the device connected to your speakers.
Every track is original music owned by Sonosfera, made specifically for commercial spaces. It's designed to create atmosphere, not demand attention, which is exactly what background music should do. Tap play on the sample earlier to judge for yourself.
Sonosfera uses its own catalogue route instead of giving access to every mainstream song. That keeps the product focused and affordable. Traditional licensing costs £470/year; Sonosfera starts at £149.90.
If your room needs chart hits, specific artists, DJ sets, or live-music cover, a blanket society licence is the right tool, and we'll tell you so. Sonosfera is for venues that want great background atmosphere from a catalogue we own outright, with proof on hand, and none of the licensing stack.
