Temporary music licence for events: check the permit, then check the music.
A Temporary Events Notice and a music licence are different checks. Use this page to separate council event permission from music playback permission, then compare Sonosfera short-term passes for fixed-date Sonosfera catalogue use.
Quick answer
Check event permission with the council or venue. Check music permission with the right music source or licensing body.
First separation
TEN paperwork and music permission answer different questions.
GOV.UK and local councils are the starting point for Temporary Events Notice questions in England and Wales. PPL PRS is the official UK route to check mainstream public music licensing. Sonosfera sits in a narrower lane: fixed-date playback from the Sonosfera catalogue, with proof tied to eligible paid setup.
What it handles
Temporary Events Notice
The permission to hold certain regulated activities at a temporary event.
Music permission
The rights position for the music or audio you play in public.
Where to check
Temporary Events Notice
Start with GOV.UK and the local council responsible for the event location.
Music permission
Start with PPL PRS for mainstream repertoire, or use a source-specific product such as Sonosfera for Sonosfera catalogue playback.
What it does not do
Temporary Events Notice
A council notice is not a blanket copyright licence for every song played at the event.
Music permission
Music permission does not replace council, alcohol, premises, safety, or noise-control obligations.
Where Sonosfera fits
Short-term passes are for fixed-date Sonosfera catalogue playback.
Choose this route when the event needs background music from the Sonosfera catalogue, one independent stream, and a simple pass path instead of an ongoing subscription. If you need chart music, radio, DJs, live performance, or third-party playlists, keep that licensing route separate.
Event checklist
Before you open the doors, make each permission visible.
The useful question is not "how do I get around a licence?" It is "which permissions match this venue, this event, and this music source?"
Venue permission
Ask the venue or council which event permissions apply to the activity, alcohol, hours, and entertainment format.
Music source
Separate the event permit question from the audio question. Commercial tracks, radio, DJs, live music, and Sonosfera playback are different routes.
Proof trail
Keep emails, venue answers, licences, pass receipts, and certificate records together before the event opens.
Describe the event in plain terms
Write down the venue, dates, expected audience, whether alcohol is involved, and where people can hear music.
Ask the venue what is already covered
Some venues already have permissions for parts of the event. Get the answer in writing and check what is excluded.
Choose the music route
Use PPL PRS or another appropriate route for mainstream repertoire. Use Sonosfera when you want fixed-date playback from the Sonosfera catalogue.
Keep proof close to the event team
Make sure the person running the room can find the event paperwork, music source, and account proof if questions come up.

Common questions
Keep event permits and music playback in separate boxes.
This page is operational guidance, not legal advice. Use the official sources for current rules and keep Sonosfera claims limited to Sonosfera catalogue playback.
Is a Temporary Events Notice the same as a temporary music licence?
No. A Temporary Events Notice is a council route for certain temporary activities. Music permissions are about the rights position for the audio you play. Many events need both questions checked separately.
Does Sonosfera replace PPL PRS or TheMusicLicence?
For playback from the Sonosfera catalogue, you don't need TheMusicLicence — our catalogue isn't registered with PPL PRS, and eligible paid accounts or passes get proof of that. Sonosfera only covers its own catalogue, though: if you also play mainstream repertoire, radio, DJs, live music, uploaded files, or third-party playlists, those still need the relevant official route.
Can I use a personal streaming account for event background music?
Do not treat a personal streaming subscription as event music cover. Use a business music product or the relevant public-performance route for what will actually play in the room.
Where should a UK organiser start?
Start with GOV.UK or the local council for event permission questions, then check PPL PRS or the music source owner for the audio rights question. Sonosfera short-term passes are one option for fixed-date Sonosfera catalogue playback.
Do Sonosfera short-term passes include certificate proof?
Eligible paid accounts and passes can keep certificate-ready records for Sonosfera catalogue playback. The public certificate page explains the format and limits before checkout.
Ready for fixed dates
Choose a short-term pass or compare the monthly route.
For a weekend event, pop-up, market, outdoor class, showroom, or short campaign, start with short-term pricing. For longer or recurring use, monthly pricing is usually the cleaner setup.
