Best Music Service for UK Gyms: 2026 Price & Features

Q: Does one music subscription cover the gym floor and fitness classes?

Not necessarily. The software may technically play in both places, but the venue's licensing calculation and the musical job are different. PPL PRS asks about background-music area and class frequency, while a class may need tightly structured mixes that are unnecessary on the general floor.

Q: How many music zones does a gym need?

Count the rooms that need different music at the same time. Reception and an open floor can sometimes share one stream. A live HIIT class and a simultaneous Pilates session normally need separate streams.

Q: Is a clean-content filter enough?

It reduces risk, but staff should still audition stations and retain skip or ban controls. Metadata can miss context, and a non-explicit track can still be wrong for a family session or calm class.

Q: What should a provider quote include?

Ask for the monthly and annual price, VAT basis, number of locations, number of simultaneous zones, offline capability, required hardware, cancellation terms and a written statement of which UK music rights are and are not included.

Best Music Service for Gyms UK: 2026 Full Comparison

By Sonosfera Team
Updated 21 July 2026

Sonosfera's founder runs a real salon and received PPL/PRS enforcement letters. That experience is why this comparison starts with the unglamorous questions: what can staff play all day, what will it cost, and which rights paperwork still belongs to the venue?

If your search is for the best music service for gyms UK, do not choose on catalogue size alone. For an independent gym that will use only Sonosfera's catalogue, Sonosfera is the lowest-cost UK option here at £14.99 a month. For mainstream music, sophisticated scheduling and many sites, Soundtrack or Soundsuit offer deeper controls. FITRADIO is the most class-specific choice. CloudCover should not be on a UK shortlist without written confirmation because its official site describes support for the US and Canada.

Sonosfera is our product, so treat that recommendation as a disclosed point of view, not an anonymous ranking. The prices, limitations and licensing boundaries below are shown so you can check the conclusion against the way your gym actually operates.

What music changes in a workout

Music is not a substitute for coaching, programming or member service, but the research supports taking it seriously. A meta-analysis covering 139 studies, 598 effect sizes and 3,599 participants found beneficial effects for how people felt during exercise (g = 0.48) and for physical performance (g = 0.31). It also found that performance effects were larger with fast music than with slow-to-medium music (Terry et al., 2020).

A separate experiment found that preferred music increased motivation compared with silence (p < 0.001; effect size 1.31) without producing a significant improvement in the measured sprint-performance variables (Cavaggioni et al., 2025). That distinction matters: music can make a workout feel more motivating without guaranteeing faster times or heavier lifts.

This does not mean every room should run at maximum tempo. A spin class needs a predictable beat and planned changes. A mixed gym floor needs enough energy for movement without sounding like a two-hour HIIT session. Pilates needs space for breathing and spoken instruction. The useful question is not “Is this playlist energetic?” but “Is its tempo, lyrical content and intensity right for this room at this time?”

Current price and feature comparison

Prices checked 21 July 2026. Figures are published list prices in each provider's own currency. Annual equivalents, VAT, promotional offers, hardware and public-performance charges are not interchangeable, so compare the billing term and number of zones as well as the headline number.

Provider	Published price	Gym controls	Offline and zones	UK rights position and best fit
Sonosfera	£14.99/month flat	Mood-led business playlists; metadata-based explicit-track filtering	Offline playback and the concurrent-stream allowance should be confirmed for your chosen setup	No PPL/PRS for Sonosfera-only playback (AI-generated, rights-controlled catalogue — see the licensing note below). Best value when an independent gym is happy with a non-mainstream catalogue
Soundtrack	Starter £32, Essential £41 or Unlimited £60 per zone/month; annual billing is £29, £37 or £54 per month equivalent	Scheduling and explicit filter on all plans; precise track order and queueing on Unlimited	Offline Mode is Unlimited-only; each independently playing zone adds cost	Strongest for mainstream catalogue depth, multi-site administration and detailed scheduling; UK public-performance permission is separate
Gym Radio	€69/month; yearly plan is 20% off, equivalent to €55.20/month	Gym-specific stations, daily updates, audio promotions, explicit and soft-explicit filters	Provider advertises uninterrupted playback during an internet outage; enterprise multi-location controls are quote-based	Good for a high-energy floor that needs little staff input; its own FAQ says some countries still require a public-performance licence
Soundsuit	Curated €34/month or €29/month billed yearly; Control €44/month or €39/month billed yearly per zone	Calendar day-parting, strict explicit filtering and, on Control, track-by-track playlists	Control includes offline playback; pricing is per zone or user	Good middle ground for scheduled mainstream music and multi-location control; UK venues still need the relevant venue permission
FITRADIO	Gyms Pro $49.99/month	Hour-long mixes built around a consistent BPM; particularly useful for classes	Offline and multi-zone business controls are not stated on the reviewed Gyms Pro page	Class-led option for HIIT, circuits and spin; FITRADIO explicitly says its business service does not cover the venue's public-performance licence
Pandora CloudCover	Music $18.95, Manage $23.95 or Messaging $29.95 per location/month; annual equivalents are $16.95, $21.50 and $26.95	Family-friendly stations and drag-and-drop schedules; Manage adds central control	CloudBox can continue through poor connectivity; extra zones on Manage or Messaging are $12.95/month	Not a verified UK option: the provider describes its service as US- and Canada-ready. Useful benchmark, not a UK recommendation

The lowest subscription is not automatically the lowest operating cost. A one-room gym and a chain with a reception, strength floor, cardio floor and three studios are buying different numbers of simultaneous streams. A provider charging per zone may cost four or five times its headline price in the second example.

UK licensing: separate the catalogue from the venue permission

Sonosfera-only playback does not require PPL/PRS because the catalogue is fully AI-generated and rights-controlled. A UK gym that plays any other music — mainstream tracks, radio, TV, a DJ or instructor uploads — needs TheMusicLicence from PPL PRS for that music.

That boundary is per-source, not per-building. A floor station running on a personal Spotify account, or an instructor plugging in their own playlist for one studio, is enough to bring TheMusicLicence back into scope for that music — even while Sonosfera keeps playing everywhere else.

GOV.UK says gyms and other health facilities usually need TheMusicLicence when they play live or recorded music in public. PPL PRS's current gym guidance gives two useful July 2026 examples:

Background music used only as accompaniment to workouts in a gym up to 249 square metres: £747.29 a year plus VAT.
An instructor running three classes a week for 50 weeks: £702 a year plus VAT, or £4.68 per class.

Those are examples, not universal quotes. PPL PRS asks about audible floor area, screens and the number of classes, so a service subscription and TheMusicLicence should be separate lines in your budget.

A consumer account does not solve the service side either. Spotify states that its service is for personal, non-commercial use. Paying PPL PRS does not rewrite Spotify's account terms; use a business service for business playback.

Match the tempo to the job

The ranges below are practical starting points for auditioning playlists, not medical prescriptions. Member mix, instructor style, room acoustics and programme design matter more than hitting a single number.

Gym use	Starting tempo	What to listen for
General training floor	105–125 BPM	Forward motion without exhausting members who are there for 60–90 minutes
Strength and free weights	110–130 BPM	A steady pulse, fewer abrupt drops and enough variety to avoid a looped “hardcore” feel
HIIT, circuits and spin	130–155 BPM	Clear phrasing and planned changes that support work and recovery blocks; the instructor must remain intelligible
Treadmills and cardio	120–145 BPM	Consistent energy; do not assume every runner will synchronise their stride to the beat
Pilates, mobility and cool-down	60–90 BPM	Low lyrical density, gentle transitions and no sudden bass or volume spikes

For a class, tempo is part of the programme. The instructor may need eight-count phrasing, predictable drops, a warm-up arc and a clear cool-down. FITRADIO's consistent-BPM mixes suit that job better than a random floor station.

For the open gym, exact cueing matters less than variety and a controlled energy curve. Running 150 BPM from opening to close turns “motivating” into fatigue.

Day-part the building, not just the playlist

A useful weekday schedule might look like this:

Time	Floor plan	Class and quiet-room plan
05:30–09:00: 6am rush	Clean, familiar-feeling energy around 115–130 BPM; avoid a slow opening hour	Spin or circuits can run faster on a separate class feed
09:00–16:00: mixed daytime	Broader genres around 100–120 BPM for retirees, remote workers and quieter training	Pilates stays lower-tempo and low-vocal rather than inheriting the floor soundtrack
16:00–20:00: evening peak	Lift the floor towards 120–140 BPM, but keep explicit filtering on	Evening HIIT can use a tightly structured high-BPM mix; yoga or Pilates needs its own zone
Last hour	Step down towards 90–110 BPM so the room does not feel frantic at close	Use recovery music after the final class instead of leaving the peak playlist running

Day-parting is valuable only if it runs without daily intervention. Soundtrack, Soundsuit and CloudCover publish scheduling tools. If a provider does not automate the timetable, assign named playlists to shifts and make one role responsible for the change. “Staff will remember” is not a system.

Explicit lyrics: make the safe setting the default

A clean badge is useful, but it is not the whole policy. Gyms should:

Turn the explicit-content filter on at account level, not device by device.
Check whether the service distinguishes explicit from soft-explicit content.
Give reception a quick skip or ban control without giving every employee permission to rebuild playlists.
Test stations during staffed and family-access hours; metadata can be incomplete.
Keep a short incident log when a track is unsuitable so the same problem is not rediscovered by the next shift.

This matters most on an unsupervised floor, where one badly timed lyric reaches the whole room. In an instructor-led class, the coach should audition the actual mix because “clean” lyrics do not guarantee an appropriate theme or usable class structure.

Offline playback: test it with the internet off

“Works in a browser” and “keeps playing during an outage” are different claims. Before committing, disconnect the test device for ten minutes and check:

whether the current track finishes and the next one starts;
how much music is stored locally;
whether schedules still change;
whether the explicit filter remains active;
whether playback recovers without staff signing in again.

Soundtrack limits Offline Mode to Unlimited. Soundsuit lists offline playback on Control. Gym Radio advertises interruption-free playback during an outage. CloudCover ties stronger outage resilience to its CloudBox hardware.

FITRADIO's reviewed Gyms Pro page and the supplied Sonosfera brief do not state enough to promise offline operation, so ask for a live demonstration rather than assuming it.

Multi-zone: count simultaneous atmospheres

Map those spaces with the gym music zoning guide before choosing how many streams you need.

A zone is an independently playing stream, not the same playlist sent to more speakers. A typical gym might need:

reception: welcoming music at a moderate volume;
strength and cardio floor: higher energy;
Studio A: an instructor-led class mix;
Studio B: Pilates or yoga;
changing rooms: lower-volume background music.

If reception and the floor can share one feed, do not buy two zones. If HIIT and Pilates run at the same time, they cannot share one. Ask each provider to quote the maximum number of simultaneous streams at your busiest hour and show whether head office can lock content, volume and explicit settings per zone.

This is where headline prices become misleading. Soundtrack and Soundsuit price by zone. CloudCover charges by location and then for extra zones on its higher plans. Gym Radio's enterprise arrangement is quote-based. FITRADIO's public Gyms Pro page is not a detailed multi-site specification. Sonosfera's flat price should be checked against the exact number of simultaneous streams your gym requires.

Which provider fits which gym?

Independent gym using one controlled catalogue

Sonosfera is the straightforward budget choice at £14.99 a month, or £149.90 a year on the annual plan. It suits an owner who wants business playlists, explicit filtering and a clear Sonosfera-only rights position without paying for a mainstream artist catalogue.

If Epidemic Sound is on your shortlist, read the Epidemic Sound comparison for UK gyms.

The trade-off is equally clear: the catalogue is fully AI-generated, so choose it only after listening in the actual room. Browse the background music for gyms route and compare it with current UK plan details. If members expect chart artists by name, another provider is a better fit.

Multi-site gym that wants mainstream music

Soundtrack has the deepest operational package in this group: weekly scheduling, central management, explicit filtering, Spotify playlist import and an Unlimited tier for on-demand control and offline playback. It is also the easiest service here to under-price accidentally because the charge is per zone and UK public-performance permission is separate.

Soundsuit is the closer alternative when calendar day-parting, strict filtering and per-zone control matter, but the gym does not need Soundtrack's largest control stack. Its Control tier adds offline playback, custom playlists and multi-location administration.

For either service, price the building on simultaneous zones and add TheMusicLicence as a separate UK cost. Do not compare a one-zone annual teaser with a five-zone monthly requirement.

Class-led studio

FITRADIO is the clearest specialist for instructors because it publishes hour-long, consistent-BPM mixes and a Gyms Pro plan. It is a stronger fit for spin, circuits and HIIT than for a reception or mixed day-long floor. The provider expressly says the subscription does not include the venue's public-performance licence.

A studio may still need a separate background-music solution for arrival, reception and post-class periods. That is not duplication if the two services perform different jobs, but it should be a deliberate choice.

High-energy weights or cardio floor

Gym Radio is built for this narrower use case. The €69 monthly plan includes gym stations, daily updates, explicit controls, audio promotions and outage playback. It removes playlist work from staff, but its public page does not establish detailed UK multi-zone pricing. Ask for a written quote and written confirmation of what remains for PPL PRS before buying.

CloudCover

CloudCover's prices are real, but it is not a verified UK recommendation today. Its official availability material names the US and Canada, and its royalty wording refers to that operating model. Keeping it in a UK ranking without that warning creates a false option. Use it only as a North American price benchmark.

A seven-day gym audition

Run the same test for every shortlisted service:

Monday 06:00: can reception start the correct clean playlist in under a minute?
Tuesday evening: can the floor and Pilates room play different energy levels simultaneously?
Wednesday class: does the mix support instructor cues without fighting the microphone?
Thursday outage test: does playback continue and recover?
Friday close: does the schedule step down automatically?
All week: record unsuitable tracks, repeats, staff interventions and silence.
Before purchase: get the price, billing term, zone count, hardware, cancellation terms and UK rights boundary in writing.

Choose the service that passes the busiest real week, not the one with the longest feature list.

Frequently asked questions

Can a UK gym use Spotify if it also has TheMusicLicence?

TheMusicLicence addresses public-performance permission for repertoire represented by PPL PRS. Spotify separately restricts its consumer service to personal, non-commercial use, so a gym should use a business music service.
