Short answer: Do not add a venue-wide playlist until you have listened to the arcade without it. Machines, attractions, prize calls and announcements may already fill the room. Use shared background music only in clearly chosen areas, and keep some zones quiet when speech or existing sound needs the space.

Begin with subtraction
Walk the floor during a realistic busy period and list what is already audible.
| Area | Existing source | Speech task | Shared music decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entrance | Machines and guest arrival | Welcome and access information | Low or none |
| Main machine floor | Many local machine sources | Staff assistance | Often no added source |
| Prize counter | Machines, PA and conversation | Detailed guest exchange | Quiet-first |
| Café or seating | Spill from floor | Orders and conversation | Separate decision |
| Party room | Event source | Host instructions | Named exception |
The current PPL PRS entertainment and attractions guidance includes amusement arcades among the uses it addresses. List the background, in-game and other sources you actually use, then take that inventory to the current check. This is not legal or acoustic advice.
Avoid an arbitrary number
There is no universal percentage or decibel setting in this checklist. Stand at the prize counter, entrance and a machine fault point. Can staff and guests exchange information without leaning into another source? If not, reduce or remove the shared music before changing anything else.
Retest after a machine layout change. The room's sound map can change even when the background system does not.
Where Sonosfera fits
For an approved seating, entrance or café zone, Sonosfera provides independent streams and phone volume controls. Those controls can support a deliberately limited shared source.
It does not control machine audio, attraction effects, PA calls or party suppliers, and its catalogue terms keep outside sources separate. No shared music is a valid conclusion. If a seating or café area does need a separate stream, use the multi-zone guide, then check current UK plans for those zones only.
Put the decision on one floor card
For a seating or café area that does need its own music, compare the relevant room guides in the business-type directory. Do not treat the machine floor as another café.
- machine and attraction sources listed;
- PA and announcement owner named;
- quiet-first areas marked;
- shared-music zones and hours recorded;
- speech test completed from staff and guest positions;
- layout-change retest date recorded.
Frequently asked questions
Does every arcade need background music?
No. The inventory may show that existing machine sound is enough. The useful plan is the one that fits the actual floor, not the one with the most audio layers.
Can one volume setting work all day?
Do not assume it can. Occupancy and active machines change. Use a simple opening, busy-period and closing check instead of a permanent number.
This applies to Sonosfera's own catalogue at the locations on your plan. No PPL PRS licence needed for Sonosfera music under an active plan. Music from other sources needs its own licence. See the catalogue terms for the locations and uses covered by your plan.
