Best business music services in India (2026): a buyer's guide

By Sonosfera Team

Quick answer: the best business music service in India depends on whether you need recognisable Bollywood/chart music with local rights checked separately, or an own-catalogue service with clearer certificate records for that catalogue. If you run a shop or public-facing venue and want the simpler self-serve route first, start with Sonosfera's background music for retail guide, then compare India providers by catalogue scope, IPRS/PPL/Novex/RMPL treatment, certificate proof, zone pricing, and cancellation terms.

This guide is for Indian business owners — shops, cafés, salons, gyms, clinics — who want business background music with a clear rights route without overpaying.

Most "best business music" lists compare the wrong thing. They line up monthly prices and stop there — when the question that actually decides whether you're legal is who clears the music.

So before the table, the one-line answer: in India you're really comparing two separate things at once — the music (the app and its catalogue) and the rights (your legal right to play music in a public space). Muddle those two and you either overpay or play music you're not cleared to use. Here's how the real options stack up, and how to choose without guessing.

Fast facts for Indian venues

For a Netherlands location, use the Dutch business-music comparison and check that market separately from the Indian venue.

First, the bit everyone gets wrong: music vs. licence

Playing music in an Indian business is not the same as paying for a music app. India's rights landscape is fragmented, and that's the single most important thing to understand before you compare prices.

• Consumer apps don't count. Consumer streaming services are usually written for personal use, not venue playback. Spotify's own commercial-use guidance says it is for personal, non-commercial use, so do not treat a normal streaming subscription as business clearance.
• A business music service gives you a catalogue cleared for commercial play. That's the baseline every option below is meant to clear — but "cleared" can mean different things, so read it carefully.
• Rights in India are collected by more than one body. Broadly, the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) represents the underlying musical works (composers, lyricists, publishers), while recorded-music rights — the rights in the actual sound recordings — are handled by separate bodies (PPL India, Novex and RMPL are commonly cited names), depending on the catalogue. This recorded-music side is fragmented and contested, so treat any single name as a starting point rather than a complete answer. Because no one body covers everything, two venues playing different music can owe different organisations.
• "Royalty-free" means something specific. Some services own or write all their music, so for their catalogue they say no separate society fee is due. That can be real — but it only holds while you play their tracks. Play commercial Bollywood or chart music too, and local licensing is back in scope.

So the sharp question for every service below is: does this catalogue actually cover my Indian rights, or just hand me music I have to license separately? When a provider doesn't spell out IPRS / PPL / Novex / RMPL treatment in writing, treat its positioning as a claim, not a guarantee — and check with your local music-licensing body before you cancel anything.

How to choose in 5 questions

1. What do you actually want playing? Recognisable Bollywood or chart hits, or a consistent background vibe? Chart music almost always pulls in local public-performance rights on top.
2. Goal: stop paying society fees, or just be legal? "Legal" is achievable. "No society fees at all" only works with an own-catalogue/royalty-free service — and only if you play nothing else.
3. One room or several? Most services price per zone or per location, so a two-floor restaurant can cost double the headline figure.
4. Self-serve app, or managed? Do you want to press play yourself, or have someone install hardware and run in-store radio for you? India has strong local players for the managed route.
5. Do you need proof? If a landlord, franchise or mall management might ask, you want a service that issues a certificate for its catalogue.

International apps with public pricing

These work for Indian venues but quote in euros or dollars, so check the checkout currency and whether tax is added. None of them is confirmed to cover India-specific society fees — verify that part directly. Prices below were taken from each provider's public pricing pages in June 2026; quote-led services are marked as such, and currencies and plans change, so confirm at the checkout before you rely on a figure.

How we compared providers

Sonosfera is included in this list, so the fair way to read the guide is by criteria, not brand preference. We compared each provider on five buyer checks: public price transparency, catalogue/licensing scope, India-specific rights wording, zone or location pricing, and whether the venue gets certificate-style proof for the covered catalogue. When a provider's public page did not clearly explain India-specific IPRS/PPL/Novex/RMPL treatment, we kept that uncertainty visible instead of treating marketing copy as legal proof.

Indian and local in-store specialists

India has a healthy set of home-grown in-store radio and background-music providers. Most are demo- or contact-led rather than self-serve, and pricing usually isn't public — but they're the natural shortlist if you want a local supplier or managed in-store radio.

• Hoopr — an Indian music-licensing platform offering a catalogue cleared for commercial and content use; a useful starting point if you want a local provider that talks about Indian rights directly. Confirm public-performance scope for your venue type.
• Background Music India — positions itself as royalty-free/licence-friendly music for Indian hotels, cafés, restaurants and shops, and discusses the IPRS/PPL context directly. Treat the broader legal claims as positioning until verified.
• MakeMyRadio — in-store radio for Indian retail and hospitality, built around branded audio and scheduled playback rather than a self-serve app. Expect a quote and bespoke setup.
• Alenka Media — background-music supply for venues, contact-led; confirm exactly which rights are and aren't covered for India before you rely on it.
• Radiowalla, Spooler, Ooka Audio and FabPlay — in-store radio and brand-radio specialists for Indian retail, hospitality and chains. Expect a quote and bespoke setup rather than a price page.

For larger estates, PlayNetwork is an enterprise managed-music provider serving brands across many countries — compare it on service depth and multi-site management rather than a public price.

Where Sonosfera fits

Sonosfera is a self-serve app for venues that want a consistent, on-brand sound without the faff. You get playback of the Sonosfera catalogue, a visual player that turns the music into colour, category stations you can set per room, transparent pricing, and certificate-ready records for paid accounts. Start with background music for retail, the India comparison hub, and current India pricing.

Honestly: it's the right call when you want a simple, good-looking background-music setup built around Sonosfera's own catalogue. It's not the tool if you specifically need to play commercial Bollywood or chart hits, want enterprise hardware installed, or need a managed team running in-store radio across dozens of sites — the local specialists and managed providers above suit those jobs better.

Because India's rights bodies are fragmented, a sensible plan is to start with a service whose catalogue scope you understand, then confirm with your local music-licensing body whether anything else applies to your venue. A Sonosfera certificate describes eligible Sonosfera catalogue playback for the covered account and period — it isn't proof for chart music, radio, DJs, live music, uploads or third-party playlists.

Want to skip the comparison spreadsheet? Try Sonosfera — £14.99/month, Sonosfera catalogue playback covered for eligible paid accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to play Spotify in my Indian business?

Do not treat a personal Spotify account as business clearance. Spotify's public guidance says the service is for personal, non-commercial use. For a shop, cafe, salon, gym, clinic, or restaurant, use a business music route and confirm whether local public-performance rights apply to the exact catalogue you play.

Do Indian shops and restaurants need a music licence?

Often, yes, but the exact answer depends on the music and use. India splits music rights between the underlying songs and lyrics, collected by the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS), and sound recordings, handled by bodies such as PPL India, Novex, or RMPL depending on the catalogue. Because no single organisation covers every situation, confirm what applies to your specific music before assuming an app covers it all.

Which is the cheapest legal option?

Self-serve international apps start in the low double digits per month in euros or dollars, while local Indian in-store providers are usually quote-led. The cheapest overall route can be an own-catalogue or royalty-free service that removes a separate society fee for its own music, but that saving only holds if you play just that catalogue and have confirmed the scope in writing.

I have more than one room. Does the price change?

Usually, yes. Many services charge per zone or per location, so a restaurant with a dining floor and a separate bar can pay more than the headline figure, and a two-floor salon can do the same. Always check whether your quote is per room or per site before you compare two providers on price.
