Music for Businesses in Australia: Services and OneMusic Checks (2026)

By Sonosfera Team

Quick answer: music for businesses in Australia is not just a playlist choice. First decide whether you need recognisable chart music, which usually keeps OneMusic Australia in the conversation, or an own-catalogue service where the certificate only covers that provider's catalogue. If you run a shop, cafe, salon, gym, clinic, or restaurant, compare providers by OneMusic scope, catalogue fit, room or zone pricing, certificate proof, cancellation terms, and venue type. Start with Sonosfera's Australian cafe page, retail guide, gym guide, or restaurant guide, then check the Australia comparison hub.

This guide is for Australian business owners — shops, cafés, salons, gyms, clinics — who want business background music with a clear rights route without overpaying.

Most "best business music" lists compare the wrong thing. They line up monthly prices and call it a day, when the question that actually decides your bill is who covers the licence.

So before the table, the one-line answer: in Australia you're comparing two separate things at once: the music (the app and its catalogue) and the licence (your legal right to play music in a public space). Get those two muddled and you can overpay, cancel the wrong thing, or keep using a source that is not suitable for business playback. Here's how the current options stack up, and how to pick without guessing.

First, the bit everyone gets wrong: music vs. licence

Playing music in an Australian business normally needs a OneMusic Australia licence — the single licence that bundles APRA AMCOS (which collects for songwriters and publishers) and PPCA (which collects for record labels and performers). That's separate from where the music comes from.

A quick bit of history, because it explains the name: OneMusic Australia is a relatively recent simplification. For years Australian businesses had to hold two separate public-performance licences — one from APRA AMCOS and one from PPCA. OneMusic Australia was launched as a joint initiative to combine those into a single licence and a single bill, so the "two societies, two invoices" era is what it replaced. That's why older guides and forum posts still talk about "APRA and PPCA fees" separately, while the modern path is one OneMusic licence covering both.

• Consumer apps don't count. Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and a home radio subscription are consumer routes, not a clean business-music setup for a shop, cafe, salon, gym, clinic, or restaurant.
• A business music service gives you a catalogue cleared for commercial play. That's the baseline every option below clears.
• "Royalty-free" means something specific. Some services write or own all their music, so for their catalogue you don't owe APRA AMCOS / PPCA. That's real — but it only holds while you play their tracks. The moment you also play commercial chart music, a OneMusic licence is back in scope.

So the sharp question for every service below is: does this catalogue remove my OneMusic bill, or just hand me music I license separately?

The music-vs-licence split test

The fastest way to read any service is what we call the music-vs-licence split test: for every option, separate what you're paying into two buckets — the music (the app and its catalogue) and the licence (your legal right to play it in public). Then ask one question: does this service's price collapse both buckets into one, or only fill the music bucket and leave the licence bucket open? An own-catalogue service collapses both for its own tracks. A streaming-style service fills only the music bucket, leaving a OneMusic licence still owed. Run every name below through that single test and the comparison stops being about headline price and starts being about total cost.

How to choose in 5 questions

1. What do you actually want playing? Recognisable chart hits, or a consistent background vibe? Chart music almost always means a OneMusic licence on top.
2. Goal: remove a OneMusic dependency, or just avoid consumer-app risk? A business service helps with the source of the music. "No OneMusic fee" is a narrower claim that only works with a provider's own catalogue, and only if you play nothing else.
3. One room or several? Most services price per zone or per location, so a two-room salon can cost double the headline figure.
4. Self-serve app, or managed? Want to press play yourself, or have someone install hardware and run it for you?
5. Do you need proof? If your landlord, franchise office or internal compliance reviewer might ask, you want a service that issues a certificate for its catalogue.

Your printable AU business music decision checklist

Copy these eight lines onto a notepad (or print this section) and tick each one before you sign up to anything:

• I've decided whether I need chart hits or just a consistent background vibe.
• I've run the service through the music-vs-licence split test above.
• I've confirmed whether a OneMusic licence (APRA AMCOS + PPCA) is still owed on top.
• I've counted my rooms/zones and checked whether pricing is per zone or per location.
• I've noted the currency the price is quoted in (AUD, USD, EUR or GBP) and any tax at checkout.
• I've checked whether the service issues a certificate, and exactly what it covers.
• I've confirmed in writing what the certificate does not cover (Spotify, radio, live music, DJs).
• I've added up the real monthly total: music + any OneMusic fee + per-room multipliers.

Self-serve apps with public Australian pricing

The most practical group for an independent shop, café, salon or gym — clear pricing, you run it yourself.

We checked each provider's public pricing page in June 2026 and recorded whether pricing was self-serve, per-zone, annual-only, or quote-led. Treat this as a dated public-source snapshot, not a live checkout quote. Exact competitor prices change, so this page describes price visibility and sends you to the live provider source before you buy.

If your priority is the simplest own-catalogue route with no extra OneMusic fee for that catalogue, the own-catalogue/royalty-free names here are where to look. Confirm the certificate covers how you'll actually use it before you cancel or skip any local licence.

Royalty-free & own-catalogue specialists

These position their catalogue as cleared for commercial play, so for their music you may not owe APRA AMCOS / PPCA. Confirm the scope in writing before you cancel any licence.

• Melodial — says it owns or directly licenses every track, supplies a compliance certificate, and positions its catalogue outside collecting-society repertoire for covered uses.
• VibeBeats.ai — an Australian direct-licensed/proprietary-catalogue route that positions itself as no APRA or OneMusic fees for covered catalogue playback. Treat that as covering its own catalogue only — not Spotify, live music, DJs or other sources.
• Background Music for Business — royalty-free background music aimed at Australian restaurants, cafes, shops, hotels and clinics.
• Soundproof Music — OneMusic-compliant music for business, with custom playlists and royalty-free options.
• StorePlay — its Sonos support page notes APRA and PPCA fees can be managed through StorePlay; built for retailers, restaurants, salons and commercial premises.

Managed & installed services (quote-led)

No self-serve price — you talk to sales, and you usually get hardware, multi-site management or bespoke curation. Best for larger estates and brands.

• Soundtrack — popular and polished, available in Australia; check its Australia licensing page and the OneMusic route before assuming public-performance is included.
• Nightlife Music — an established Australian provider that is explicit that a OneMusic licence is required and not included in membership (see its licensing page).
• QSIC — enterprise-led, says it handles music-licensing requirements per territory; not self-serve.
• Mood Media Australia, Stingray Business, PlayNetwork, Audalize, datmedia, MediaGroup and Moov Music — managed and bespoke specialists for retail, hospitality and franchise estates; expect a quote rather than a price page, and confirm how each handles OneMusic.

How we assess services

A note on method and on our own stake here, so you can weigh this fairly. We assess each service on the same five things: public price transparency, what its catalogue actually clears for licensing, per-room/per-zone cost, self-serve vs managed delivery, and whether it issues a usable certificate. We don't run affiliate links and we earn nothing if you pick a competitor — but you should know Sonosfera is one of the services in this comparison, so we have a direct commercial interest in it. We've tried to keep the table and the "where Sonosfera fits" note below honest about where Sonosfera is the wrong choice, and we'd rather you pick the right tool than the wrong one with our name on it.

Where Sonosfera fits

Sonosfera is a self-serve app for venues that want a consistent, on-brand sound without playlist maintenance. You get playback of the Sonosfera catalogue, a visual player, category stations you can set per room, transparent Australian pricing, and certificate-ready records for paid accounts.

Honestly: it's the right call when you want a simple, good-looking, legal background-music setup for Sonosfera's catalogue. It's not the tool if you specifically need to play commercial chart hits, want enterprise hardware installed, or need a managed team running music across dozens of sites — the names above suit those jobs better. And like any own-catalogue service, it covers its own music: if you also play Spotify, radio, live music or a DJ, those uses can still bring local licensing into scope.

Want to skip the comparison spreadsheet? Try Sonosfera — A$15.99/month, Sonosfera catalogue playback covered for eligible paid accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to play Spotify in my Australian business? Consumer Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and similar consumer accounts are not a reliable business-playback route for an Australian venue. Use a business music service and check the public-performance licence position; in Australia that usually means checking OneMusic Australia.

Do I still need a OneMusic licence (APRA AMCOS + PPCA)? If you play commercially released chart music, almost certainly yes. If you only play a service's own royalty-free catalogue, that music may not require it — but confirm the scope with the provider in writing before you cancel anything.

What's the cheapest legal option? In the June 2026 public source review, some self-serve providers published entry pricing while many managed providers were quote-led. The cheapest overall can be an own-catalogue/royalty-free service that removes the OneMusic dependency for its own music, provided you're happy playing only that catalogue and the certificate matches your venue use.

I've got more than one room — does the price change? Often, yes. Many services charge per zone or per location, so a salon with a styling floor and a separate treatment room can pay twice the headline price. Check whether your quote is per room before you compare.
