Direct answer: if you run a UK salon, cafe, gym, shop, or clinic, do not compare Jukeboxy and Sonosfera only by playlist size or monthly fee. Jukeboxy's own site says its business-music subscription includes licensing coverage for the USA and Canada. For a UK venue, the safer comparison is: confirm whether Jukeboxy can document UK coverage for your exact use, compare Sonosfera's UK catalogue-scoped route, and keep TheMusicLicence separate for any outside mainstream music you play.
Start with the venue path that matches your business: background music for retail stores, background music for salons, background music for gyms, or music for cafes. Then compare current UK pricing and the wider UK business music comparison.

If you run a UK venue, picking background music looks simple until you hit the licensing question. The fee a provider charges and the licence a venue may owe a collecting society are two different things. Conflating them is how owners end up comparing the wrong costs, or assuming a provider's licence applies in a country where it has not been documented for them.
This guide is for UK business owners comparing Jukeboxy and Sonosfera in a practical way: country coverage, catalogue scope, operational fit, and what to check before you sign up.
Fast comparison
| Question | Jukeboxy | Sonosfera |
|---|---|---|
| Best-known positioning | Expert-curated, commercially licensed business music for USA and Canada | Self-serve, catalogue-scoped background music for small venues and service businesses |
| UK venue check | Ask for written UK coverage before relying on it | Use the UK product/pricing route and keep outside repertoire checks separate |
| Music model | Mainstream business-music catalogue with licensing coverage stated for USA/Canada | Curated Sonosfera catalogue with records for eligible paid accounts |
| Strong fit | North American multi-location teams that want mainstream catalogue management | UK salons, cafes, shops, clinics, gyms, and owner-run venues that want a simple documented soundtrack |
| Still check separately | UK public-performance position if the venue is in the UK | TheMusicLicence for radio, TV, DJ, live, uploaded, third-party, or mainstream music outside Sonosfera |
The one distinction that changes everything
In the UK, playing recorded music in public usually needs TheMusicLicence, a licence sold by PPL PRS. That licence is separate from the product you use to schedule, stream, or manage music in the room.
Your music provider is a separate thing. Some providers supply the player, the curation, and the catalogue but still expect the venue to hold the correct public-performance permissions. Others build their service around an own catalogue, royalty-free catalogue, or direct-licensed catalogue, so the permission question is scoped to that provider's music rather than to everything you could play.
So when you compare services, you are really comparing two models:
- Mainstream-catalogue services: you get familiar commercial music, and you must check the country-specific public-performance licence position.
- Catalogue-scoped or original-catalogue services: the provider documents commercial-use rights for its own catalogue, while outside music still needs separate checks.
Sonosfera sits in the second camp: a curated catalogue you can use for business ambience, with a clearer record for the Sonosfera music you actually play.
What Jukeboxy says about coverage
Jukeboxy describes itself as a commercial background-music service for businesses, with licensing coverage for its stated markets, curated playlists, scheduling, multi-location management, and in-store audio messaging.
The important UK caveat is country scope. Jukeboxy's public homepage and pricing/FAQ copy frame licensing coverage around the USA and Canada, including US PROs and Canadian rights bodies. That is useful evidence if you operate in those markets, but it is not the same as UK-specific proof.
That is not a criticism of Jukeboxy. It is exactly the kind of coverage detail a venue owner should look for. If your venue is in the United States or Canada, Jukeboxy may be a direct candidate. If your venue is in the UK, ask Jukeboxy for written UK coverage before treating it as your licensing route.
UK venue decision table
| Your situation | Better first step |
|---|---|
| You want recognisable mainstream music in a UK venue | Check TheMusicLicence with PPL PRS, then compare business-music suppliers that document UK coverage. |
| You want a simpler own-catalogue route for a salon, cafe, shop, gym, or clinic | Start with Sonosfera's retail, salon, gym, or cafe route and current UK pricing. |
| You are already using Spotify or a personal streaming account | Stop treating that as a business licence. Spotify's own support says personal Spotify is not for public or commercial playback. |
| You operate in the USA or Canada and want mainstream catalogue coverage included | Evaluate Jukeboxy directly from its current pricing and licensing pages. |
| You operate in the UK and still want to evaluate Jukeboxy | Ask for written confirmation of UK public-performance and catalogue coverage for your exact venue type before relying on it. |
This is also why the "cheapest monthly fee" is the wrong first metric. A low subscription that does not cover the country, catalogue, or use case you need is not actually cheaper. Compare the documented rights scope first, then the operational fit, then the current price.
Where Sonosfera fits
Sonosfera is built for owner-run venues and service businesses. The catalogue is curated for background ambience rather than chart-hit recognition: calm, warm, focus-friendly music for rooms where conversation, treatments, service pace, or browsing still matter.
That does not mean Sonosfera is the answer for every venue. If your brand depends on familiar Top 40 tracks, a mainstream-catalogue route plus the right UK licence checks may be the honest answer. If you want consistent background music with a clearer record for the catalogue you actually use, Sonosfera is the more relevant UK comparison.

FAQ
Do I still need TheMusicLicence if I subscribe to a music service?
It depends on the catalogue and the country coverage. If a service plays mainstream, commercially released recordings in a UK venue, you should check TheMusicLicence from PPL PRS for public performance. If a service is built on a documented own catalogue, that may be scoped differently for that catalogue. Check the provider's own licensing page and confirm with PPL PRS if you are unsure.
Is Jukeboxy a UK business music provider?
Jukeboxy's public site positions its licensing-included service around businesses in the USA and Canada. If you are in the UK, do not assume that coverage applies automatically. Ask Jukeboxy for UK-specific confirmation before relying on it for a UK venue.
What does catalogue-scoped music mean for a venue?
It means the provider documents commercial-use rights for the music in its own catalogue. It does not cover music you add from elsewhere, such as radio, TV, DJ sets, live performers, personal streaming, uploaded songs, or third-party playlists.
How much should UK background music cost?
Use the provider's live pricing page and the current PPL PRS tariff instead of relying on old numbers in a blog post. The key is total cost: subscription, licensing, hardware, multi-room or location fees, cancellation terms, and whether the documented licence actually fits your venue.
Can I just use Spotify or a home streaming account?
No. Spotify's own public-commercial-use support page says Spotify is for personal, non-commercial use and cannot be played publicly from businesses such as bars, restaurants, stores, salons, or dance studios. Use a business music route and check the relevant UK licence position for the music you play.
